Favorite books of 2021 (and 2020)

My blog is new, so I’ve never picked out favorite books for a year, but here we go. My ten faves for 2021, fiction and nonfiction, out of the 66 books I read:

1. New Testament — the recent translation by David Bentley Hart

2. Notre Dame de Paris

Translated by Alban Krailsheimer

3. Lonesome Dove

4. Huckleberry Finn

I also read the notes in the annotated version by Michael Patrick Hearn, and it is outstanding.

5. Anna Karenina

Pevear/Volokhonsky translation

6. The Paris Library

7. The Long Winter

8. Little Women

9. Home of the Brave

10. Chickadee (tie)

10. A Marginal Jew Vol. II: Mentor, Message and Miracles (tie)

In 2020 I had read far fewer books (29 in total), because it was only around July, as it became apparent that quarantine was not ending any time soon, that I began reading.

But my list for 2020 would be —

1. Don Quixote

Burton Raffel translation

2. War and Peace

Anthony Briggs translation

3. Mansfield Park

4. Pride and Prejudice

5. Northanger Abbey

6. Three Gospels

Translation of the Gospels of Mark and John

7. The Female Quixote

8. The Birchbark House

9. Persuasion

10. The Spiritual Danger of Donald Trump
